Organizational Context
The Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) advances policy and action on financing for sustainable development. It supports Member States in achieving global development agendas through thought leadership, multistakeholder dialogue, policy options, and capacity development. This role is situated within the Office of the Director and focuses on international development cooperation.
Job Purpose
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will support the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in its mission to advance policy and action on financing for sustainable development. This role contributes to achieving global development agendas by conducting economic and sector analysis, preparing policy-relevant materials, and supporting intergovernmental processes. The officer will analyze socioeconomic information, maintain databases, draft reports and briefing notes, and assist in organizing expert meetings and consultations. A key focus will be on international development cooperation, including its effectiveness and financing, contributing to the FSDO's mandate of providing thought leadership, promoting dialogue, and offering strategic advice to Member States and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Conduct economic and sector analysis by collecting, evaluating, and interpreting socioeconomic statistics and qualitative information, with a focus on international development cooperation trends. Maintain databases and organize non-quantitative information. Prepare briefing notes, speeches, and draft components of analytical studies on development issues and policies for non-specialists. Assist in organizing and servicing expert group meetings, advisory groups, and consultations. Prepare inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies and summarize proceedings of relevant meetings, such as the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development. Support technical cooperation by compiling data for project proposals, preparing documentation, and contributing to capacity development activities. Monitor and assess the implementation of technical cooperation projects. Contribute to data analysis, trend identification, and reporting using data visualization methods.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or development program application is required, with at least one year focused on international development cooperation. Experience supporting capacity development activities and technical training programs is also required. Knowledge of South-South and triangular cooperation, intergovernmental processes, and servicing intergovernmental bodies is desirable.
