ASSOCIATE HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICER (TJO)

Organizational Context

This position is within the National Institutions, Regional Mechanisms Unit (NIRMU) of the Global Operations Division (GLO) at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The incumbent reports to the Unit Coordinator, contributing to the OHCHR's mandate in promoting and protecting human rights globally.

Job Purpose

The Associate Human Rights Officer will support the National Institutions, Regional Mechanisms Unit by researching and analyzing human rights matters, particularly concerning national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and their gender dimensions. The role involves drafting reports, maintaining awareness of current human rights issues and political/legal developments, and liaising with various stakeholders including NHRIs, governments, NGOs, and UN agencies. The officer will contribute to capacity building through training programs, promote the "Paris Principles," and assist in efforts to prevent human rights violations and mobilize communities. Additionally, the role involves data analysis and visualization to support planning and reporting, ensuring effective dissemination of information and project progress tracking.

Responsibilities

The Associate Human Rights Officer is responsible for researching and collecting information on human rights, focusing on national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and their gender dimensions, and analyzing its impact. Duties include drafting human rights reports and correspondence, staying informed on current human rights issues and relevant political/legal developments. The role involves maintaining contact with and servicing the Global Alliance of NHRIs, and participating in training programs to build national capacity. The officer will review human rights issues, discuss their integration into broader efforts, and support community mobilization and the exercise of rights. Collaboration with authorities and influential actors to prevent violations is key. Liaising with diverse partners to establish baseline data, organizing and implementing training activities, and ensuring dissemination of "Paris Principles" and related guidelines are also core responsibilities. The role includes designing and maintaining databases for project tracking and contributing to data analysis and visualization for reporting.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related field is required. Experience with national human rights institutions is desirable. No experience is needed for candidates who have passed a UN Competitive Recruitment Examination.
