Organizational Context
This role is within the new Innovation and Digital Transformation Service in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) at the UN Secretariat. The Service aims to catalyze innovation and advance a data-driven, digitally resilient approach to peacekeeping. The incumbent reports to the DPET Director and oversees the management of the Service's activities, coordinating efforts across various UN entities and peacekeeping missions.
Job Purpose
The Principal Programme Management Officer will lead and implement innovation and digital transformation strategies for UN Peacekeeping, leveraging data and technology to enhance mandate implementation, safety, security, and efficiency. This involves coordinating teams and stakeholders, ensuring high-quality outputs, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and managing programmatic and administrative tasks. The role contributes to strengthening peacekeeping operations through improved systems, data governance, and cross-mission learning, while also managing staff and resources effectively to achieve strategic objectives.
Responsibilities
Lead and supervise activities for innovation and digital transformation in UN Peacekeeping, utilizing data and technology to improve mandate implementation, safety, security, and efficiency. Coordinate work across internal teams (Digital Transformation, Innovation, CPAS/Evaluation, Information Integrity) and external entities, including peacekeeping missions and OICT, focusing on data governance and interoperable systems. Ensure outputs meet high-quality standards, support evidence-based decision-making, and facilitate cross-mission learning. Assist the DPET Director in developing and implementing annual work plans and the Digital Transformation Implementation Plan, including resource allocation and priority setting. Manage programmatic and administrative tasks, including budgeting, performance reporting, staff evaluation, recruitment, and development. Foster teamwork and communication, and represent the Division in relevant meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of fifteen years of progressive experience in leading change management or innovative programmes, programme management, or administration within an international context is required. Experience in managing complex projects and working on digital transformation in a UN entity or public organization is desirable. Experience in peacekeeping is also desirable.
