Organizational Context
The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan (IIMA), established by Human Rights Council Resolution 60/2, is mandated to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence of international crimes and serious violations of international law in Afghanistan. The mechanism aims to prepare case files for criminal proceedings in national, regional, or international courts. This Associate Interpreter position is based in Vienna, under the direct supervision of the Head of the Language Service Unit.
Job Purpose
The Associate Interpreter provides crucial consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services between Dari/Pashto and English for the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan (IIMA). This role supports meetings involving IIMA staff, interlocutors, and high-ranking officials, as well as the sensitive collection of statements for criminal justice purposes. The interpreter must accurately convey complex and confidential information, including details of traumatic events, ensuring clarity and precision in legal settings. Additionally, the role may involve checking verbatim records, contributing to data analysis and reporting, and performing translation tasks when interpretation is not required, all under the supervision of the Head of the Language Service Unit.
Responsibilities
Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between Dari/Pashto and English, both in-person and remotely, for meetings, workshops, and the sensitive collection of statements for criminal justice purposes. Interpret for IIMA staff, civil society, high-ranking officials, and during detailed discussions of traumatic events. Verify verbatim records to ensure accuracy between interpreted and original language versions. Contribute to data collection, analysis, and reporting using data visualization methods. Undertake translation assignments as directed by the Supervisor. Perform other related duties as required to support the mechanism's mandate.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of professional experience in interpreting and translating within international organizations is required. Experience in interpreting witness interviews, Dari/Pashto interpretation, and working within a criminal justice context are desirable.
