ASSOCIATE ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICER
Organizational Context
This position is within the Sustainable Transport Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Associate Economic Affairs Officer reports to an Economics Affairs Officer (P-4) and is under the overall supervision of the Director of the Transport Division (D-1). The role is temporarily available for three months, with a possibility of extension.
Job Purpose
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will conduct economic and sector analysis, including collecting, evaluating, and interpreting socio-economic data from various sources. This involves maintaining databases, assisting with econometric models, and preparing analytical studies and briefing notes on development issues. The role also supports intergovernmental processes by preparing inputs for reports and following meetings. A key focus will be assisting with the implementation of the ITC Climate Action Plan and the ITC Strategy on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Inland Transport, including research for pilot national action plans and supporting biennial reporting and consultations.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include conducting economic and sector analysis by collecting, evaluating, and interpreting socio-economic data, maintaining databases, and assisting with econometric models. The role involves preparing briefing notes and first drafts of analytical studies on development issues and policies, and supporting the organization of expert meetings. Additionally, the officer will prepare inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies, summarize meeting outcomes, and assist in organizing panels. Specific duties include supporting the implementation of the ITC Climate Action Plan and Decarbonization Strategy, researching pilot national action plans, reviewing legal instrument mandates, and supporting biennial reporting and consultations related to decarbonization and the ITC 2030 agenda.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or applying economic principles in development programs is required. Experience in the transport sector and decarbonization of inland transport is also required. Experience in servicing international meetings, drafting reports, supporting intergovernmental negotiations, and data analytics is desirable.
