ASSOCIATE POPULATION AFFAIRS OFFICER (TJO)
Organizational Context
This position is within the Population Unit of the Sustainable Development and Population Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland. The role focuses on population policy, particularly concerning population ageing and intergenerational and gender relations. The Associate Population Affairs Officer reports directly to the Chief of the Population Unit.
Job Purpose
The Associate Population Affairs Officer supports intergovernmental processes on population issues, contributing to reports, meeting summaries, and event organization. The role involves servicing meetings and working groups on ageing, fostering partnerships with national focal points and international organizations. A key function is undertaking analytical and organizational tasks for the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) implementation in the UNECE region. This includes contributing to follow-up of conferences, conducting research on population trends and policies, and developing policy briefs and technical studies. The position also contributes to the UNECE Ageing Policies Database content and technical development, and assists with other related tasks as needed.
Responsibilities
Assists in supporting intergovernmental processes on population issues by preparing draft reports, summarizing meetings, and organizing panels. Services the Standing Working Group on Ageing, expert group meetings, and seminars, liaising with national focal points and establishing partnerships with international organizations, experts, and NGOs. Undertakes analytical and organizational tasks for the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) in the UNECE region and contributes to follow-up of population-related conferences. Conducts research and policy discussions to inform policymaking. Develops policy briefs and technical studies on population trends, policies, and their socio-economic factors, focusing on ageing and intergenerational/gender relations. Maintains a dataset of good practices and prepares inputs for progress assessment papers. Contributes to the UNECE Ageing Policies Database content and technical development, coordinating subcontractor work.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of two years of progressive experience in population or policy analysis and research. Specific experience in population ageing, older persons, and related policies is mandatory. Desirable experience includes managing web-based databases, content development for qualitative databases, servicing international intergovernmental meetings, and using online collaboration tools for working groups.
