ASSOCIATE HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICER (TJO)
Organizational Context
This position is within the Coordination, Information and Communications Unit of the Special Procedures Branch, Thematic Engagement and Right to Development Division, at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The role operates under the guidance of the Chief of the Special Procedures Branch and the direct supervision of the Unit Coordinator.
Job Purpose
The Associate Human Rights Officer will research and collect information on human rights matters, including their gender dimensions, from various sources to stay informed and provide up-to-date analysis. The role involves drafting reports and correspondence, participating in consultations, and maintaining awareness of current human rights and political developments. The officer will contribute to integrating human rights issues into broader efforts, engage with authorities to prevent violations, and liaise with diverse partners to establish baseline data. A key aspect is supporting mandate holders with fact-finding missions and contributing to data analysis and visualization for planning and reporting.
Responsibilities
The Associate Human Rights Officer is responsible for researching and collecting information on human rights issues, including gender dimensions, from diverse sources. This includes analyzing information and its impact on mandates and the human rights situation in assigned areas. The role involves drafting reports and correspondence, participating in sessions and consultations, and preparing summaries. Maintaining awareness of current human rights and political developments is crucial. The officer will participate in training programs for various stakeholders and engage in discussions on integrating human rights into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts. Additionally, the role includes liaising with governments, NGOs, and UN agencies to gather baseline data, assisting mandate holders with fact-finding missions, and contributing to data analysis and visualization for reporting and decision-making.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related field is required. Experience in data analytics, report drafting, and familiarity with UN Human Rights Mechanisms are desirable.
