Organizational Context
The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the UN General Assembly in June 2023. This role, currently based in Geneva, may be subject to relocation to Damascus, Syria, or another operational location. The incumbent reports to a Human Rights Officer.
Job Purpose
The Associate Investigator supports the mandate of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) by assisting in investigations related to missing persons. This involves gathering and recording information from various sources, including witnesses, NGOs, and families. The role contributes to forensic projects, potential field missions, and the crucial collection and analysis of data. By identifying trends and patterns, the Associate Investigator provides draft insights through data visualization, supporting informed decision-making, planning, and reporting for the Institution's operations.
Responsibilities
The Associate Investigator assists in conducting investigations concerning missing persons in Syria. Key duties include gathering relevant information through interviews with witnesses, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations, and recording statements from survivors, victims, and their families. The role also involves supporting forensic projects, such as investigating burial sites, and participating in search field missions when required. Furthermore, the Associate Investigator contributes to the collection and analysis of data, identifying trends and patterns, and preparing draft insights using data visualization methods for planning, decision-making, and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in human rights or investigations is required. Experience in conducting investigations related to violations of international human rights or humanitarian law is desirable, as is investigation experience within the Middle East region.
