The International Trade Centre (ITC) aims to transform trade and change lives by enabling trade-led economic development, particularly in the Global South. The Trade and Market Intelligence (TMI) section, within ITC’s Division of Market Development (DMD), develops and enhances web-based market analysis tools like Trade Map. These tools assist MSMEs in identifying market opportunities and making informed decisions. This role focuses on improving the quality and reliability of Trade Map data through advanced data science methods.
Job Purpose
The Associate Data Scientist role supports the Trade and Market Intelligence (TMI) section in enhancing the quality and reliability of Trade Map data. This involves improving the efficiency and robustness of data production processes by applying advanced data science methods to the collection, processing, validation, and integration of trade data. The purpose is to make trade and market information more accessible and actionable for users, especially MSMEs in developing countries, enabling them to identify market opportunities and make evidence-based business decisions. The role contributes to the development of data science products and strengthens internal capabilities for data analysis, working collaboratively with market analysts and statisticians.
Responsibilities
The Associate Data Scientist will assist in exploring and acquiring suitable data sources for organizational decision-making. This includes structuring, cleaning, formatting, parsing, and standardizing data for analytical use. The role involves contributing to the design and development of data science products to enhance data collection, processing, and integration. It requires applying advanced analytical methods such as AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, and statistics to uncover insights from data. Furthermore, the position will support the promotion of data science solutions through guidance and documentation, and will be responsible for guiding and training junior consultants involved in the function.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, or information management is required. Experience with customs trade statistics or trade in services statistics is desirable. Proficiency with data science tools and packages such as Python, R, or SAS is also desirable.
Skills
Mandatory: SAS. Desirable: Python, R. Knowledge of data collection techniques (APIs, web scraping), agentic systems (prompt engineering, schema extraction), customs trade statistics, trade in services statistics, data analysis lifecycle, and statistical/computational methods (machine learning, regression, forecasting).
