Organizational Context
This position is within the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland. The role supports an extra-budgetary project focused on enhancing the traceability of sustainable value chains for critical sectors in the green transition. The Associate Economic Affairs Officer reports to a P4 Economic Affairs Officer.
Job Purpose
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will conduct economic and sector analysis, interpreting socio-economic information related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) transparency and sustainable value chains. The role involves preparing briefing notes and other materials for non-specialists. A key function is supporting intergovernmental processes, including assisting with the UNECE Team of Specialists on ESG Transparency and Traceability for Sustainable Value Chains. This includes preparing inputs for reports, summarizing meetings, and assisting in the organization of development-focused events. Additionally, the position contributes to technical cooperation by compiling data, preparing project proposals and documentation, and monitoring project implementation, all while performing other duties as required.
Responsibilities
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer is responsible for economic and sector analysis, including interpreting qualitative socio-economic data on ESG transparency and sustainable value chains, and preparing accessible briefing materials. The role involves significant intergovernmental support, such as assisting the UNECE Team of Specialists, preparing reports for expert bodies, summarizing meetings, and contributing to statements. The position also supports technical cooperation by compiling data for project proposals, preparing project documentation, and monitoring project execution. General duties include performing other related tasks to ensure service delivery and participating in training activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, policy formulation, or development program application is required. At least one year of experience specifically in ESG transparency and traceability of sustainable value chains is also necessary. Experience within the UN or similar international organizations, and in data analytics, is desirable.
