Organizational Context
This position is based in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) in Bangkok, Thailand. As part of the ROSEAP Research Hub, the role operates under the guidance of the Deputy Regional Representative and direct supervision of the Research Coordinator, contributing to UNODC's regional operations.
Job Purpose
The Open-Source Information Analyst will support the ROSEAP Research Hub by developing analytical and knowledge products on transnational organized crime and its links to security challenges. This involves collecting, analyzing, and verifying open-source information from various digital platforms, including social media and messaging apps. The role also includes preliminary analysis of cryptocurrency and blockchain data related to illicit flows and money laundering, implementing data analytics strategies, and liaising with national and international partners. The analyst will contribute to research, prepare briefing materials, support funding proposals, and apply open-source intelligence methodologies to inform regional prevention and counter-terrorism efforts, ultimately enhancing UNODC's research and analytical capabilities.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the development of analytical and knowledge products on transnational organized crime and its nexus with security challenges. Collect, analyze, and verify open-source information from digital formats, social media, and messaging platforms, assessing credibility and veracity. Undertake verification, authentication, and geolocation of digital content. Conduct preliminary analysis of cryptocurrency and blockchain information related to illicit flows and money laundering typologies. Implement data analytics processes, acquire and clean data, and maintain databases. Liaise with government counterparts and international partners to exchange findings and discuss crime trends. Prepare briefing materials for management and contribute to funding proposals. Apply open-source intelligence methodologies to monitor online environments related to violent extremism and terrorist financing. Analyze trends and patterns using statistical methods and propose specialized software for data analysis and visualization. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in collecting, analyzing, and managing information on transnational organized crime or related fields is required. Experience in monitoring online markets and social media is desirable, as is experience with data manipulation and analysis concepts. Experience with link analysis software and geospatial analysis tools is also desirable.
