ASSOCIATE INTERPRETER, ARABIC (Temporary Job Opening)

Organizational Context

This position is within the Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The role operates under the direct supervision of the Mission Coordinator and the overall supervision of the Chief of Investigations Support Section within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Job Purpose

The Associate Interpreter/Translator will provide accurate translation and simultaneous interpretation between English and Arabic, ensuring a gender-sensitive approach, particularly concerning age and gender in relation to sexual and gender-based violence. The role involves participating in field missions to interpret interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources. Additionally, the incumbent will translate written and oral statements, media articles, and other documents verbatim. Maintaining strict confidentiality and security of information is paramount, alongside performing other necessary tasks to support the mission's objectives.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include providing accurate English-to-Arabic and Arabic-to-English translation and simultaneous interpretation, integrating a gender perspective, especially regarding sensitive language and documentation of sexual and gender-based violence. The role requires participation in field missions to interpret interviews with victims, witnesses, and sources. A significant duty involves the verbatim translation of written and oral witness statements, media articles, and other documents. The incumbent must maintain strict security and confidentiality of all information and perform any other assigned tasks.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of work experience in translation and/or interpretation is required. Experience within the UN Common System or regional organizations is desirable, as is experience supporting human rights investigations or on human rights-related subjects. Relevant regional working experience is also a plus.
