Communications Officer
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. It works with partners to save lives, protect migrants, and facilitate pathways for regular migration. This role sits within the IOM mission in Venezuela, reporting to the Chief of Mission and Head of PSU.
Job Purpose
The Communications Officer is responsible for implementing media and communication activities for IOM Venezuela, aligning with the Organization's guidelines and donor requirements. The role aims to promote an accurate narrative on IOM's response activities and migration-related issues to the media, public, UN, and partners. This includes developing and executing communication strategies, creating content, managing online presence, and coordinating media engagement to enhance IOM Venezuela's outreach and impact.
Responsibilities
Implement IOM Venezuela's internal and external communications strategies, promoting accurate narratives on response activities and migration issues to media, public, donors, and partners. Develop and execute project visibility and communication plans, maintaining contact with donor focal points. Draft and coordinate communication content, including stories, blogs, videos, and social media posts. Participate in national, regional, and international communication campaigns. Manage IOM Venezuela's online presence, including social media and website, to increase digital outreach. Respond to media requests, coordinate media engagement, and maintain a journalist contact database. Draft key messages, statements, and talking points. Coordinate graphic design for internal and external products, ensuring adherence to IOM brand guidelines. Liaise with UN Country Team Communication Groups for joint campaigns. Contribute to training materials and deliver training. Undertake field travel for content gathering and ensure proper consent and data protection for media assets.
Work Experience
Experience in coordinating and implementing digital communications and social media activities. Proven experience in corporate writing and editing. Experience supporting donor visibility and liaising with the media, preferably in the region. Experience in humanitarian communications. Experience working in the region or in an emergency setting is an advantage.
Skills
Knowledge of migration issues, social cohesion, and migrant inclusion. Excellent liaison and networking skills with government agencies, donors, and NGOs. High personal commitment, efficiency, flexibility, drive for results, respect for diversity, and creative thinking. Ability to prioritize, work independently under pressure, and manage workload effectively. Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork. Ability to work in multicultural environments. Ability to prepare clear technical reports. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
