Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN-related agency promoting humane and orderly migration. The IOM Coordination Office for the North Pacific covers multiple island nations, focusing on disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and resilience building. This role is based in Palau, supporting communications and visibility for the Sub-Office and assisting the Marshall Islands.
Job Purpose
The Communications Officer will contribute to planning and implementing communications and visibility activities for the IOM Sub-Office in Palau, with support for the Marshall Islands. This involves developing and executing communication plans, creating public information products, and managing media relations. The role aims to enhance IOM's outreach and ensure strategic messaging aligns with the organization's mission. The officer will also support capacity building for staff in communications, data protection, and visibility guidelines, and assist in crisis communications efforts.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement communications and visibility plans for IOM in Palau, aligning with the North Pacific strategy. Support the Head of Sub-Office in devising project-specific communication plans. Draft, edit, and produce press releases, web content, and briefing materials, ensuring accuracy and strategic messaging. Monitor communication impact and recommend improvements. Provide training and mentoring to staff on communications, data protection, and visibility guidelines. Coordinate media lines for emerging issues and crisis communications. Liaise with media and partner agencies, participating in UN and interagency communication groups. Assist in creating visibility materials, including presentations, fact sheets, and outreach campaigns, ensuring gender awareness and cultural sensitivity. Undertake travel as required and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Required experience includes digital content creation (photography, videography, graphic design, editing) and international journalism, particularly covering international organizations. Experience working in the Pacific region is considered an advantage.
Skills
Excellent skills in drafting, editing, graphic design, and video production. Demonstrated photojournalism abilities. Understanding of social media platforms and experience with UN communications and media partners. Ability to plan and manage daily communications activities. Creative and strategic thinking. Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and follow-up capabilities.
