Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Coordination Office for the North Pacific, based in Pohnpei, covers the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau, Kiribati, and Nauru. The office focuses on Disaster Risk Reduction, emergency preparedness, community resilience, and safe migration, working closely with governments and local stakeholders. This role supports the Chief of Mission and reports to the Programme Support Unit Coordinator, collaborating with regional and headquarters communications teams.
Job Purpose
The Media and Communications Officer is responsible for enhancing the visibility of IOM North Pacific's work and interventions. This involves implementing and supporting communication strategies, developing project communication plans, and creating public information materials such as press releases, web content, and briefing notes. The role also includes monitoring communication impact, managing media relations, and developing visibility materials like factsheets and videos. A key aspect is strengthening staff capacity in communication activities, ensuring adherence to organizational standards, and coordinating crisis communications. The officer will also research new communication platforms and ensure all materials are culturally sensitive and brand-aligned.
Responsibilities
Implement and support the development of IOM North Pacific's communication strategy and project-specific communication plans. Assist in preparing press materials, releases, web content, and briefing notes. Monitor and analyze the impact of external communications and ensure the country office website aligns with IOM standards. Draft, edit, and collate public information materials for various channels, coordinating with regional and headquarters communications teams. Strengthen staff capacity in communication activities through training and mentoring. Coordinate media responses and liaise with media counterparts and interagency communication groups. Develop visibility materials, including presentations, factsheets, and videos, ensuring adherence to brand guidelines and organizational standards. Research and recommend new communication platforms. Review materials for gender awareness and cultural sensitivity. Undertake travel to project sites for content collection and support visibility activities.
Work Experience
Required experience includes digital content creation (photography, videography, graphic design, editing), international journalism (especially covering international organizations), and social media engagement. Experience working with UN media partners is also required. Experience in the Pacific region is considered an advantage.
Skills
Excellent skills in drafting, editing, graphic design, and video production. Demonstrated photojournalism skills. Ability to manage both strategic planning and daily tasks. Capacity for creative and strategic thinking. Detail-oriented with strong follow-up and reporting abilities.
