Fishery Officer
Organizational Context
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, is responsible for all ecological, economic, social, institutional, governance, and policy aspects of fisheries and aquaculture. It emphasizes human wellbeing, food security, nutrition, and poverty reduction while protecting the environment. The Division collects, validates, analyzes, and disseminates sector statistics and manages living aquatic resources according to modern standards, including sustainable aquaculture and effective value chains.
Job Purpose
The Fishery Officer will support the development, management, and analysis of fisheries and aquaculture data and information systems, fostering innovation and integration of standards, tools, and methodologies across the data value chain. This role will enhance FAO's capacity for evidence-based policy support, global reporting, and knowledge products, improving the visibility and accessibility of fisheries and aquaculture information. Key results include collecting and analyzing data and statistics, providing project and meeting services, and supporting program delivery through comprehensive data analysis and reporting.
Responsibilities
Collects and analyzes relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology-related information, data, and statistics to support program projects, products, and services. Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports, and edits/revises technical/scientific documents. Participates in developing improved work methods, tools, and systems, and updates databases and web pages. Collaborates in developing training tools and materials and organizing workshops. Supports data management, processing, and analysis for FAO's knowledge products, contributing to data model design and web-based user interfaces. Assists in developing and applying data and metadata standards to enhance data quality, interoperability, and dissemination. Supports the maintenance and content management of FAO's fisheries and aquaculture web platforms and information systems, including content structuring and data integration.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in fisheries or aquaculture data management, analysis, information systems, or a related field is required. Experience with international organizations or in a multicultural setting is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in data collection, validation, analysis, and statistical software. Experience with database management and information systems. Knowledge of fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Ability to edit and review technical documents. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity with web content management and data visualization tools is an asset. Experience in capacity development and training is beneficial.
