Organizational Context
The Secretariat of the Joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission, the executive organ of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, is located in the Joint FAO/WHO Centre (Codex Food Standards and One Health) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. It services the Commission's sessions and subsidiary bodies, acting as a liaison between the Commission and various sectors of FAO, WHO, WTO, UN, and other international organizations concerned with food safety, quality, and trade standards.
Job Purpose
This role supports the effective implementation of Codex meetings by ensuring the timely supply and distribution of information crucial for the Codex Secretariat's operations. Key results include the collection and analysis of data and statistics to support programme projects, products, and services. The incumbent will gather and analyze technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology-related information, providing technical input for plans and reports, and editing scientific documents. The position also involves contributing to improved work methods, updating databases and web pages, and participating in multi-disciplinary teams and workshops.
Responsibilities
The Food Standards Officer (Data Management) will update Codex databases for pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, food additives, and other relevant areas, ensuring standards are ready for publication post-adoption. Responsibilities include supporting the preparation of technical papers and meeting reports for subsidiary bodies, particularly committees on food additives, pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, contaminants, and analytical methods. The role involves contributing to the adoption of new technologies for data management and collection, attending relevant meetings on behalf of the Secretariat, and collating statistical information on Codex work for monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, the officer will support information provision and capacity development for governments and interested parties regarding food standards.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required in supporting the development and application of food standards or food control work at national and/or international levels. Experience in data management and databases is also essential.
Skills
Key skills include strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, proficiency in data management and database technologies, and experience in knowledge sharing systems and continuous optimization. Experience in preparing, editing, and revising technical documents and writing concise reports is important. A good understanding of food safety and standards terminology is required. Experience in an international standard-setting environment or with the Codex Alimentarius Commission is a strong asset.
