Organizational Context
The Patent and Technology Law Division (PTLD) within WIPO's Patents and Technology Sector supports the international patent framework's evolution. It administers patent treaties and advises Member States on patent-related legislation and policy, including trade secrets. PTLD also leads WIPO's work on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs).
Job Purpose
This role supports the implementation and coordination of WIPO's Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) initiatives. The incumbent will conduct legal research, manage projects, and contribute to policy and analytical outputs. The position is key to translating the WIPO SEP Strategy into actionable activities and deliverables, and planning its future direction. Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders is essential. The role also involves contributing to SEP discussions in international forums, such as the SCP, and supporting broader divisional work in patent law and related intellectual property fields.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will implement and coordinate WIPO's Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) initiatives, acting as a focal point and managing assigned projects. Responsibilities include conducting legal and policy research on SEP management, licensing, enforcement, and case law, and drafting relevant documents. The role involves contributing to the strategic planning of future SEP activities, identifying emerging issues, and assisting in the design of new initiatives. Coordination with other WIPO Divisions and updating SEP-related information, including website content, is required. Engaging with Member States, industry, academia, and Standard Developing Organizations, and supporting events are key. The incumbent will also contribute to SEP discussions in international meetings like the SCP, and assist with research and capacity-building in other patent law and IP areas as needed.
Work Experience
Essential: At least six years of relevant professional experience in patent law (policy, drafting, prosecution, licensing, or litigation). Minimum two years of experience with Standard Essential Patents (policy, transactional, or litigation). Desirable: International or private sector experience, patent/innovation/standardization policy, competition law, project management.
Skills
Understanding of patent law and international treaties. Ability to draft complex legal texts and conduct independent legal research. Skill in communicating complex legal subjects to diverse audiences. Excellent time management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in digital tools and AI applications. Commitment to continuous learning and adopting new technologies.
