Organizational Context
The Policy and Legislative Advice Section, within WIPO's Brands and Designs Sector, supports Member States in trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. It formulates policies and provides strategic direction to strengthen WIPO's role as a global forum for these IP categories, aiding Member States in their implementation and use.
Job Purpose
This role facilitates normative outcomes and delivers expert policy and legal advice to Member States concerning trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. The objective is to support Member States in establishing an environment conducive to the development and practical application of these intellectual property rights. This involves guiding normative processes and providing specialized legal and policy insights to enhance the global framework for IP protection and utilization.
Responsibilities
Provide expert policy and legal advice on trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. Supervise activities related to Article 6ter of the Paris Convention. Develop and implement strategies to promote accession to the Singapore Treaty and Riyadh Design Law Treaty. Draft and review legal instruments, including treaty texts and legislative materials. Provide secretariat services to committees, preparing analyses and authoritative advice. Coordinate and conduct research on complex legal issues and precedents. Lead, plan, and manage the Section's work, resources, and performance. Organize capacity-building activities for Member States in trademark and design administration. Represent WIPO at international meetings, offering legal expertise.
Work Experience
At least ten years of relevant professional experience in trademark, design, and geographical indication law and policy, including international experience. Experience managing a team of professionals is essential.
Skills
Excellent knowledge of legal and policy issues in trademark, design, and geographical indication law and international treaties. Ability to conduct legal research, draft complex legal texts, and communicate complex legal matters. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in digital tools and AI applications. Commitment to continuous learning and adopting new technologies.
