Organizational Context

The PCT Translation Division, within WIPO's Patents and Technology Sector, is responsible for high-quality translation of patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This includes scientific, technical, and legal documents, primarily abstracts and reports related to invention patentability. The French Translation Section is a key part of this division.

Job Purpose

The incumbent will assess the quality of human and machine-generated translations, respond to linguistic queries, and translate and self-revise specialized scientific and technical texts from English and at least one other PCT publication language into French. This role also involves providing training to translators, contributing to terminology compilation, selecting and assessing translation tests, and staying current with translation and terminology technologies. The goal is to ensure accurate and high-quality translations for patent-related documents.

Responsibilities

Key duties include assessing the quality of internal and outsourced translations, as well as machine-generated texts, predominantly in patent, scientific, and technical fields, from English and other PCT languages into French. This involves providing feedback to suppliers and revising internal translations for accuracy and adherence to guidelines. The incumbent will translate, post-edit, and self-revise texts to meet quality, quantity, and timeliness standards without further review. Collaboration with technical teams to optimize AI translation systems, answering complex linguistic queries, and training/mentoring translators are also crucial. Participation in terminology work, evaluation of translation tools, and assessment of translation tests for candidate selection are also required.

Work Experience

At least seven years of relevant professional experience, primarily in technical or scientific translation. Experience in intellectual property translation is desirable.

Skills

Advanced translation, revision, editing, and quality assessment skills. Ability to provide authoritative feedback, grasp complex technical/legal issues, and train translators. Proficiency with AI translation systems and translation technology tools. Ability to work accurately under strict deadlines. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for multicultural environments.
