Organizational Context

The World Health Organization's Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Control Directorate leads regional efforts to prevent and manage diseases, promote mental health, and address health determinants. This role specifically supports NCD prevention and healthcare, focusing on cancer control within the Eastern Mediterranean Region, aligning with WHO's strategic work and the Regional Director's vision.

Job Purpose

This Technical Officer position aims to strengthen WHO's work in Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) prevention and healthcare, with a primary focus on cancer prevention and control across the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The role will provide crucial technical advice to Member States, support the development and implementation of national cancer control programs, and assess regional capacities. By fostering collaboration, disseminating WHO guidelines, and building national capacity, the position contributes to advancing health promotion and disease control priorities, ultimately supporting the achievement of regional and global cancer control goals.

Responsibilities

Provide technical advice to Member States on cancer prevention and control, particularly for childhood and common cancers. Draft, revise, and develop national cancer control programs aligned with national health strategies and NCD plans. Assess regional childhood cancer control infrastructure, policies, and plans through data collection and expert consultation to enhance collaboration and strategic direction. Establish and coordinate information-exchange networks for WHO guidance and tools. Support national capacity building for global cancer initiatives, including organizing workshops and facilitating partner engagement. Mentor consultants involved in regional cancer control strategies. Assist with other technical tasks related to NCDs and cancer prevention and control.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of relevant experience in medicine and public health practice, with international exposure, is required. Experience in cancer control within low- and middle-income countries is essential. Experience within the WHO, UN system, or other international health organizations, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, is desirable.

Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of political, social, and health systems in the EMR. Technical and programmatic expertise in NCD prevention and management, including cancer. Understanding of WHO's role, mandates, strategies, and action plans. Strong communication, teamwork, and partnership-building skills. Ability to adapt and work in a changing environment.
