Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to recruit a National Nutrition Consultant to lead the revision, formulation, and drafting of the National Nutrition Strategic Plan and the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) Management Protocol. This role is crucial for aligning national interventions with international standards and priorities, aiming to improve the quality of care for malnourished children and mothers. The consultant will facilitate multisectoral coordination, ensure evidence-based strategies, and develop standardized clinical protocols to reduce complications and mortality associated with malnutrition, thereby enhancing the country's response to nutritional challenges and protecting vulnerable populations.
Responsibilities
The consultant will conduct a thorough review of existing nutrition-related documents and frameworks in the country. They will support the analysis of the current nutrition situation from a multisectoral perspective, identifying gaps and opportunities. Key duties include facilitating technical consultations with relevant sectors (health, agriculture, education, social protection, WASH) and stakeholders. The consultant will draft the National Nutrition Strategic Plan and a standardized national protocol for the prevention, identification, clinical management, follow-up, and referral of SAM cases, ensuring alignment with WHO recommendations. They will also organize and facilitate validation workshops with the Ministry of Health and technical partners, and integrate feedback to produce final versions of both documents.
Work Experience
Essential: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in nutrition and public health, including proven experience in developing national nutrition policies, plans, or strategies, and multisectoral programmatic frameworks. Experience in managing severe acute malnutrition, revising clinical protocols, and collaborating with sectoral ministries and technical partners is required. Experience in situational analysis and facilitating technical consultations is also important. Desirable: Relevant experience with WHO or other UN/international organizations.
Skills
Strong expertise in public health nutrition, particularly severe acute malnutrition. Good command of WHO recommendations. Knowledge of the national health system and the multisectoral approach to nutrition. Proven skills in situational analysis, drafting strategic documents and clinical protocols, collaboration with diverse actors. Strong analytical, synthesis, communication, professional rigor, and results-oriented capabilities. WHO competencies: Teamwork, Respecting and promoting differences, Establishing and promoting partnerships, Communication, Ensuring effective use of resources. Language skills: Excellent knowledge of Spanish and/or French; knowledge of English is an asset. Other skills: Proficiency in economic analysis, budgeting, and financial modeling tools.
