Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is recruiting a Radio Operator for its operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This role is part of the AF_COD department, specifically supporting security operations in various provinces including Sud Kivu, Nord Kivu, Ituri, Kasai, Mai Ndombe, and Tshopo.

Job Purpose

The Radio Operator will be responsible for ensuring the effective and secure management of radio communication systems, operating 24/7 under the supervision of the Security Officer. This includes maintaining daily contact with all personnel and vehicles in the operational area, ensuring adherence to radio protocols, and managing emergency communications. The role is critical for maintaining situational awareness, facilitating safe movement of staff and assets, and responding promptly to any security incidents. The operator will also be responsible for equipment maintenance, reporting, and training other staff on radio usage, contributing directly to the overall safety and security framework of WHO operations in the region.

Responsibilities

The Radio Operator will manage the radio communication station according to UN Security Management System procedures, handling both normal and emergency situations. Key duties include conducting daily radio checks, reporting to the Security Officer, and maintaining constant contact with staff and vehicles. The operator must ensure all radio users adhere to the Radio Code and Standard Operating Procedures. Responsibilities also encompass generating weekly and monthly radio control statistics, maintaining radio equipment, and logging all personnel and vehicle movements. Additionally, the role involves regular tracking of vehicles and field missions, training staff on VHF and HF radio equipment, and promptly recording and reporting all emergency calls.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of work experience in security is required. Previous experience with the WHO or other NGOs is desirable. Experience in managing radio communication systems and emergency response protocols is beneficial.
