Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is committed to strengthening Member States' capacities to manage health emergency risks and to lead international action during outbreaks. This role supports the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme (EPR) in the Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically within the Ituri province, to enhance logistical capabilities for responding to urgent transport needs.

Job Purpose

This Chauffeur position is established to address a critical gap in the logistics unit supporting the WHO's response to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Bunia, Ituri province. The primary purpose is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of authorized personnel, delivery of mail and documents, and collection of essential items. The role is crucial for maintaining operational continuity and supporting the rapid deployment of staff in a high-risk environment, contributing directly to the effectiveness of the WHO's emergency health operations and response efforts in the region.

Responsibilities

The Chauffeur is responsible for operating WHO vehicles to transport authorized personnel, official mail, documents, and other items. This includes greeting official visitors at the airport and assisting with immigration and customs procedures as needed. Daily vehicle maintenance is a key duty, involving checks of oil, water, battery, and brakes, as well as tire pressure. The Chauffeur must also manage minor repairs and arrange for more significant servicing, ensuring the vehicle is always clean and in good working order. Accurate record-keeping of official trips, mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance is required. Additionally, the Chauffeur must ensure all necessary procedures are followed in the event of an accident and perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.

Work Experience

Essential: Minimum of 2 years of driving experience. Desirable: Experience working with a United Nations agency is an advantage.

Skills

Proficient driving skills, knowledge of traffic laws and safety regulations, daily vehicle maintenance, ability to report accidents concisely, basic first aid knowledge, ability to read and follow instructions and maps, basic knowledge of Word and Excel, and fluency in French.
