The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office for India supports the government in improving health outcomes through various initiatives. This role contributes to the WHO's strategic agenda on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Health, focusing on responsible and equitable integration of AI technologies to strengthen India's health system, aligning with national strategies and global best practices.
Job Purpose
This role serves as the primary WHO focal point in India, coordinating engagements with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Health Authority. The purpose is to support the operationalization of the Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare for India (SAHI) by translating its recommendations into actionable plans. This involves developing foundational elements of the AI ecosystem, including governance, evaluation frameworks, and workflow integration guides, ensuring alignment with India's digital health architecture and program priorities. The position aims to foster the responsible, equitable, and evidence-based use of AI for health system strengthening.
Responsibilities
Lead the implementation of WHO India's program for technical support to the government in operationalizing the Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (SAHI). Collaborate with the National Health Authority and other government counterparts to identify opportunities for AI in primary healthcare, public health functions, service delivery, surveillance, and health systems management. Provide technical advice on AI policy, governance, standards, and implementation, supporting the development of national frameworks and roadmaps for AI adoption in health. Work on establishing governance mechanisms for responsible AI in health, providing inputs on ethical, privacy, safety, transparency, and accountability considerations. Facilitate the development and adoption of risk assessment and evaluation frameworks for AI solutions and support the assessment of health system readiness for AI integration. Support the adoption of systematic evaluation frameworks for AI-enabled solutions in areas like primary health care and public health intelligence.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum of 2 years of experience working with India’s health system and familiarity with AI applications in healthcare. Desirable: Understanding of India’s digital health architecture (ABDM, eSanjeevani, national registries), experience in stakeholder coordination, policy analysis, technical writing, health technology assessment, or clinical workflow design.
