Organizational Context

The Health Systems, Access and Data division supports universal health coverage and Sustainable Development Goals through resilient health systems. The Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (TMC) leads WHO's efforts to integrate traditional medicine into global health systems, focusing on research, evidence, and equitable access. This role contributes to optimizing traditional medicine's impact on global health.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to support the achievement of universal health coverage and Sustainable Development Goals by leading WHO's efforts to integrate traditional medicine into global health systems. This involves ensuring safe, effective, and equitable access to traditional medicine practices through research, evidence generation, and strengthening health systems. The role aims to establish a robust evidence base, support regulatory mechanisms, and foster cross-sector collaboration to optimize the contribution of traditional medicine to global health and sustainable development, supporting Member States in harnessing its potential for health and wellness.

Responsibilities

Develop and update the monitoring and evaluation framework for the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy, including reporting. Liaise with the Traditional Medicine Research, Data and Innovation unit to support clinical research and evidence-based norms for TCIM interventions. Develop WHO norms and guidelines, including clinical practice guidelines and interventions for UHC packages. Establish TCIM care-quality related norms and standards for regulation. Support Member States in planning, governing, and promoting evidence-based TCIM integration into national health systems. Provide technical support and coordination on norms and standards for the implementation of the WHO global traditional medicine strategy. Perform other duties as requested.

Work Experience

Essential: At least 7 years of experience in traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) programs, including normative and clinical practice, and collaboration with national agencies. Demonstrated experience in developing WHO global strategies or action plans for TCIM. Desirable: Experience with WHO/UN or international agencies, developing countries, and resource mobilization for TCIM.

Skills

Demonstrated knowledge of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine and its integration into health systems. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills. WHO Competencies: Teamwork, Respecting and promoting individual and cultural differences, Communication, Moving forward in a changing environment, Producing results. Language: Expert knowledge of English; beginner knowledge of another WHO language is desirable.
