Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is addressing the global health crisis of lead poisoning and acute chemical poisonings. This consultancy supports WHO's efforts in the Western Pacific Region to strengthen Member States' capacity to manage hazardous chemicals and lead exposure, aligning with global action plans and the role of poison centers.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to bolster the WHO's capacity in the Western Pacific Region to enhance public health responses to chemical exposures. The role involves analyzing the current situation, developing technical solutions, and mobilizing resources to prevent and manage lead poisoning, pesticide poisoning, and other chemical-related health threats. Key contributions include developing technical packages, training materials, and strengthening national capacities and poison center networks to mitigate the impact of hazardous chemicals on public health.

Responsibilities

The consultant will provide technical inputs for lead poisoning prevention packages and draft training materials for healthcare providers. Responsibilities include supporting WHO's global and regional capacity-building initiatives, conducting situational analyses of pesticide poisoning and arrangements for antidote procurement in the Western Pacific Region, and supporting the strengthening of poison center networks. The role also involves contributing to the implementation of International Health Regulations for chemical events and developing proposals for improving public health responses to harmful chemical exposures through partnership and resource mobilization activities.

Work Experience

Essential: Minimum of 5 years of national and international experience in chemical management or poisoning prevention and control. Desirable: Experience with international organizations, UN agencies, poison center operations, surveillance systems, and familiarity with WHO policies on environment, chemical safety, and health.

Skills

Proven technical expertise in chemicals management or chemical poisoning prevention and control. Experience in environmental health research and report writing. Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Expert knowledge of English (reading, writing, speaking).
