Organizational Context
The World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Program (The Program) aims to strengthen Member States' capacity to manage health emergency risks. It leads international responses to outbreaks and provides relief and recovery support. Communication is vital for information sharing, advocacy, public awareness, and stakeholder coordination within this program.
Job Purpose
The Communication Officer will support the development and implementation of communication and advocacy strategies for WHO's Health Emergencies Program. This role is crucial for enhancing program visibility and impact by producing and disseminating high-quality communication materials, including press releases, web stories, social media content, and multimedia products. The officer will also manage media relations, provide editorial support, and contribute to risk communication efforts during emergencies, ensuring consistent messaging and alignment with WHO standards.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement communication and advocacy strategies aligned with WHO global priorities. Produce and disseminate high-quality communication materials such as press releases, web stories, situation reports, newsletters, briefs, and social media content. Create multimedia products including videos and infographics. Provide editorial support, including drafting, copy-editing, and proofreading materials. Build and maintain media relationships, facilitate press briefings, and monitor media coverage. Manage and update digital and web communication platforms, ensuring brand consistency. Support risk communication and public information efforts during emergencies. Prepare communication products for donor engagement and resource mobilization. Collaborate with UN agencies, NGOs, and national authorities for coordinated messaging.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in communications, media, or advocacy, including experience in developing communication products and strategies and supporting emergency or humanitarian response communication. Desirable: Experience with WHO, UN agencies, or international NGOs, and experience in advocacy campaigns and donor communication.
Skills
Expert knowledge of English. Strong writing and storytelling skills for advocacy. Ability to develop and implement communication strategies. Excellent media relations and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to translate technical content into accessible messages. Experience with multimedia and digital communication tools. Strong organizational and multitasking skills under pressure. Knowledge of public health and emergency response contexts. Intermediate knowledge of French is desirable.
