Organizational Context
The WHO African Regional Office (AFRO) supports Member States in strengthening International Health Regulations (IHR) core capacities for global health security. This role is within the Emergency Preparedness and Response department, reinforcing the Secretariat's operational capacity to assist the IHR Contact Point in implementing key functions.
Job Purpose
This position provides essential administrative and operational support to the WHO-AFRO IHR Secretariat. The incumbent will manage communication with IHR National Focal Points (NFPs), assist in reporting processes, and contribute to the development and distribution of guidance and tools. The role is crucial for enhancing the Secretariat's effectiveness in supporting Member States with IHR implementation and preparedness for health emergencies, thereby strengthening regional health security.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the WHO-IHR Contact Point, the Support Staff will maintain updated databases of IHR National Focal Points, Authorities, and regional experts. Responsibilities include contributing to the preparation of reports, briefing notes, and technical documents. The role involves tracking 24/7 communication with Member States on IHR notifications and providing technical and administrative input for capacity-building activities, such as workshops and training. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in monitoring the IHR Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and the implementation of IHR 2005 amendments, performing other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum of 3 years' experience in IHR implementation, public health emergency preparedness, or a related field. Desirable: Experience with WHO, UN agencies, or intergovernmental organizations, familiarity with regional health security networks, or previous work with Ministries of Health/National Public Health Institutes on IHR.
Skills
Expertise in IHR processes and emergency preparedness. Strong drafting and communication skills. Ability to produce clear technical and scientific reports. Proven ability to work in multicultural environments with diplomacy and tact. Proficiency in Excel and AI tools.
