The World Health Organization (WHO) in Angola is responding to a significant cVDPV2 outbreak. This role operates under the Incident Manager and the WHO Representative in Angola, collaborating with national and subnational technical teams to strengthen surveillance and immunization efforts.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for reinforcing Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance to detect polioviruses and support outbreak response activities in Angola. The Surveillance & Immunization Officer will provide technical support to health facilities and community networks, conduct active case searches, and assist in training health workers. Additionally, the role supports the adaptation and implementation of microplans for polio outbreak immunization, including vaccine distribution and team supervision, aiming to reach all affected districts and provinces and improve routine immunization services.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support for surveillance activities, including prioritizing reporting sites and conducting active case searches using ODK platforms. Assist in training various cadres of health workers and surveillance focal points at different administrative levels. Conduct advocacy visits to local authorities to enhance commitment and ownership of response efforts. Support the adaptation and development of microplans for polio outbreak immunization, collaborating with local leaders and health officers. Facilitate the recruitment and guidance of vaccination teams, ensuring proper planning, vaccine distribution, and accountability. Contribute to improving routine immunization services through micro-planning based on the Reaching Every Child strategy. Perform other incident-specific duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Work Experience
Essential: Two years of national experience in Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance, Polio vaccination campaigns, and polio outbreak response. Desirable: Experience in routine immunization, field experience in polio outbreak independent monitoring, and Lot Quality Assurance surveys (LQAs).
Skills
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Desirable: Analytics skills (SPSS, Tableau, Power BI) and experience with ODK-based tools and ArcGIS. Fluency in Portuguese is essential, with English being an advantage.
