Organizational Context
The Communication Officer will work under the direct supervision of the WHO Representative in Iraq, receiving technical guidance from WHO Officers and the Regional Office Media and Communication Manager. The role supports promoting effective communication tactics, establishing a press/media network, and exchanging information with national counterparts, partner organizations, and authorities.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to coordinate and implement communication and advocacy activities in support of WHO programmes in Iraq. This involves developing and executing communication strategies, creating high-quality communication materials, and disseminating public health information to target audiences and stakeholders. The role also focuses on maintaining and updating communication platforms, managing relationships with communication suppliers, and ensuring the visibility of WHO's work through various channels, including social media. Additionally, the Communication Officer will collaborate with the Ministry of Health, UN agencies, donors, and partners to organize health awareness campaigns and events, contributing to WHO's mission and objectives in the country.
Responsibilities
Coordinate communication, advocacy, and visibility activities aligned with WHO country priorities and program objectives. Develop and implement communication strategies, action plans, and SOPs. Produce and disseminate high-quality communication materials, including press releases, success stories, multimedia products, talking points, position statements, IEC materials, and advocacy briefs. Ensure timely and accurate dissemination of public health information through newsletters, web content, and feature stories. Maintain and update a database of photos and multimedia content. Manage relationships with communication suppliers (video/photographers, designers, etc.) and establish a roster of professionals. Monitor and update WHO's websites and social media accounts, liaising with regional and headquarters offices for maximum visibility.
Work Experience
Requires at least one year of experience in communications techniques and media relations, preferably within a media organization (TV, radio, print) at the national level. Experience in planning and implementing media and communication projects, including developing audio-visual materials, is essential. Knowledge of producing policy-relevant information products and experience with humanitarian crises communication are desirable.
