The Global Health and Peace Initiative (GHPI) is a WHO-led initiative launched in 2019. This role is situated within the WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO), providing operational support for GHPI implementation. The consultant will report to the FCV and HDPN officer in AFRO and the IPE Unit Head at Headquarters, which provides global technical guidance for GHPI.
Job Purpose
The consultancy aims to enhance AFRO's capacity in implementing the Global Health for Peace Initiative (GHPI), specifically focusing on Resolution WHA77.9. The role involves close collaboration with the IPE Unit at Headquarters and AFRO. The consultant's contribution will be vital in advancing the GHPI's objectives across the African region and strengthening health interventions in conflict-affected settings.
Responsibilities
The consultant will prepare comprehensive engagement and awareness-raising materials, and organize meetings specifically targeting WHO Country Office staff and relevant partners concerning the Global Health for Peace Initiative (GHPI). This includes developing presentation materials that clearly explain the 'Health and Peace' approach to programming, outlining its possible applications, and highlighting the added value of the GHPI for the African region. They will provide essential technical support to AFRO and, primarily, to WHO Country Offices for the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of 'Health and Peace' programming as required. Key duties also involve contributing to the development of robust capacity-building materials and organizing and delivering targeted training sessions for WHO staff and other stakeholders, as appropriate. The role further entails actively supporting global learning and research efforts focused on health and peace, and effectively mainstreaming research findings into various communication tools, presentations, briefing notes, and other advocacy documents. Additionally, the consultant will advocate for and contribute significantly to raising funds for the implementation of the GHPI at both regional and country levels, which includes contributing to proposal writing. Finally, they will support the development of a clear and actionable operational framework for the implementation of the GHPI within AFRO.
Work Experience
Essential: At least 5 years of experience relevant to the 'health and peace' approach, including peacebuilding, conflict analysis, conflict-sensitive programming, Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus implementation, or public health/humanitarian response in conflict settings. Desirable: Experience integrating peace outcomes or 'do no harm' principles into health/humanitarian response, providing technical support, fundraising, working in conflict/post-conflict settings, and with international organizations.
