Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the eradication of polio in Afghanistan by ensuring high routine immunization coverage, effective supplementary immunization activities (SIAs), and a sensitive Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance system. The position provides technical support to the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) for the implementation of the National Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication (NEAP). It also focuses on strengthening community engagement, guiding SIA activities, and ensuring timely data analysis for corrective actions. The role is crucial for maintaining certification standards in surveillance and contributing to the transition and legacy plans for polio eradication resources.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include liaising with polio eradication and vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) partners, securing commitment from national and local authorities, and providing technical support to the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) for the National Emergency Action Plan (NEAP). The role involves strengthening engagement with community leaders and influencers, guiding supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) for VPDs, and collaborating on their preparation, implementation, and monitoring. This includes microplanning, training, and oversight. The position requires timely data analysis for corrective actions, providing technical support for AFP and VPD surveillance to meet certification standards, and reinforcing training and supervision of surveillance staff. It also involves organizing advocacy meetings, ensuring proper case investigation and follow-up, regular data analysis, and contributing to transition and legacy plans. The role includes overseeing national support staff and submitting monthly progress reports.
Work Experience
Essential: At least 5 years of relevant experience in developing and implementing immunization programs at national or sub-national levels. Desirable: Experience working with UN or other international organizations.
Skills
Sound technical knowledge of epidemiology and surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases, prevention and control measures, and preparedness/response. Ability to establish harmonious working relationships with national and international colleagues. Expert knowledge of English and the local language.
