National Officer - Public Health Interventions

Job Purpose
This role supports the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in establishing robust monitoring and surveillance systems for public health interventions, particularly concerning chemical toxicants. The National Officer will evaluate laboratories for testing capabilities, assist in their integration into national programs, and assess healthcare system readiness for chemical exposure incidents. A key aspect involves supporting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in developing national guidelines for managing chemical exposures, such as lead poisoning, and ensuring healthcare workers are equipped for identification and treatment. The position contributes to strengthening India's capacity to address environmental determinants of health and respond effectively to public health challenges.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will support the NCDC in establishing monitoring and surveillance systems, including Human Health and Environment (HHP), detailing stakeholder roles and infrastructure needs. Responsibilities include identifying and evaluating laboratories for chemical toxicant testing, and assisting in their onboarding into the National Biomonitoring Programme. The role involves assessing healthcare system touchpoints for priority chemicals like lead and evaluating the capacity of health workers to identify and treat related exposures. Additionally, the officer will assist in reviewing preparedness and response systems for highly toxic chemical exposures and support the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in developing national guidelines for managing these chemicals. Providing technical and administrative support to NCDC as needed is also a key duty.
Work Experience
Essential: At least 1 year of experience working on environmental determinants of health, such as chemical safety, climate change, or air pollution, particularly with national and state government counterparts. Desirable: Experience working with research institutes, government institutions, reputable organizations, WHO, UN agencies, or NGOs.
