The Department of Governing Bodies (GBS) at WHO provides strategic governance and multilateral engagement support to Member States. It ensures protocol and health diplomacy in intergovernmental relations, coordinates governance matters, and maintains institutional memory. The Language Services Unit (LNG) within GBS delivers high-quality translation, interpretation, editing, and document production services to make WHO's health policies and technical information accessible globally.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Language Services Unit (LNG) within WHO's Department of Governing Bodies (GBS). The primary purpose is to ensure the accurate and timely production of official documents, reports, and publications in various languages. This involves meticulous review, proofreading, and formatting of materials to maintain consistency, correctness, and adherence to WHO's standards. The role contributes to the effective dissemination of WHO's health policies and technical information to a global audience, supporting WHO's mission of advancing health worldwide through high-quality language and document management services.
Responsibilities
Review and proofread documents, reports, tables, and graphics for accuracy in grammar, spelling, style, and references, ensuring consistency with originals. Check publication proofs after layout for correctness of page design, fonts, and terminology. Liaise with technical, editorial, and translation staff for clarification on issues. Follow up on revisions to ensure they are incorporated across all document versions. Process and format diverse materials using various software, including importing and redesigning graphics. Perform pre-processing for computer-assisted translation (CAT) and manage document storage in the official repository. Align bi-texts to support translation memory production. Supervise and mentor team members, including temporary staff for meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience is required, preferably within WHO, the UN system, or another international organization. Experience with document production standards for official, governance, and technical documents, including specialized formats and terminology, is essential. Previous experience in language services or user management is considered an asset.
Skills
Advanced word processing and desktop publishing skills. Proficiency in document production methods and graphics handling. Strong proofreading and quality control abilities. Teamwork and communication skills. Knowledge of public health terminology is advantageous. Expert knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of French are required.
