Organizational Context
The World Health Organization's (WHO) Division of Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Care (PPC) aims to advance global health. Within this division, the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety (NFS) addresses malnutrition and foodborne diseases. The Nutrition and Food Safety Action Unit (NFA) specifically drives the implementation of nutrition and food safety actions, focusing on maternal and child nutrition, obesity, and healthier food environments.
Job Purpose
This role contributes to the WHO's mission by driving the implementation of effective nutrition and food safety actions globally. The position involves developing guidance, tools, and partnerships to accelerate national efforts in areas such as combating obesity and improving food safety. It supports Member States in establishing policies and programs for better nutrition, particularly in relation to diet-related cardiometabolic diseases. The role also facilitates knowledge sharing and capacity building within the health sector to enhance the delivery of nutrition interventions and improve health outcomes for all populations.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include engaging with partner organizations to harmonize policies and ensure the implementation of WHO guidance. The role involves providing scientific, technical, and policy advice to Member States for improving nutrition through screening and lifestyle interventions, especially for diet-related cardiometabolic diseases. This includes coordinating the development of scientific guidance and tools for policy assessment and implementation. The position also entails coordinating the creation of advocacy materials and training curricula to enhance global nutrition actions. Reporting on policy adoption, program implementation, and obesity rates to senior management and partners is crucial. Collaboration within communities of practice and supporting capacity-building initiatives are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in public health nutrition, epidemiology, or medical practice, with a focus on noncommunicable diseases, is required, including at least 4 years of international exposure. A proven record of developing scientific documents and policy briefs is essential. Experience in translating science into policy, country-level policy development, and prior work with WHO or other UN agencies are desirable.
Skills
Knowledge of cardiometabolic nutrition biology and epidemiology. Understanding of public health programs for diet-related non-communicable diseases, including obesity. Demonstrated initiative, tact, responsibility, and strong communication and collaboration skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Proficiency in English is essential; intermediate French is desirable.
