Roster Of Consultants - Facilitators For Training On The Inpatient Management Of Severe Acute Malnutrition
Organizational Context
The WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) aims to support Member States in addressing malnutrition, particularly child wasting, which remains a significant public health challenge. Despite updated global guidance, a shortage of skilled facilitators hinders the effective rollout of training on severe acute malnutrition (SAM) management. WHO AFRO seeks to establish a roster of experts to support these crucial capacity-building activities across the region.
Job Purpose
This role aims to build a roster of qualified consultant facilitators with expertise in the inpatient management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications. The purpose is to ensure WHO AFRO can readily mobilize experienced professionals to support Member States in implementing updated WHO guidance and training packages. By providing skilled facilitators, the role directly contributes to enhancing the capacity of health workers in managing SAM, thereby reducing preventable child mortality and improving nutrition outcomes across the African Region. This initiative is critical for bridging the gap in skilled personnel required for effective SAM training and mentorship.
Responsibilities
Consultants will be responsible for reviewing and applying WHO-approved training packages on inpatient SAM management, ensuring technical accuracy. They will conduct training of trainers (ToT) and cascade trainings for health workers using standardized materials and competency-based approaches. Providing practical clinical mentorship during training activities in facilities is a key duty. Consultants will also support WHO and Ministries of Health in identifying capacity gaps and implementation challenges related to SAM case management. Additionally, they will provide technical reports summarizing activities, findings, and recommendations, and offer structured feedback on training effectiveness and system-level gaps.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in the prevention and management of acute malnutrition (child wasting), with demonstrated experience in clinical management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in inpatient settings. Proven experience applying WHO guidance and documented experience in capacity strengthening, including training delivery and supervision. Desirable: Experience in the WHO African Region, familiarity with 2023 WHO guidelines, and participation in relevant technical consultations.
Skills
Strong technical expertise in inpatient SAM management with medical complications; ability to translate clinical guidance into practical training and mentorship; proven skills in adult learning and facilitation (case-based learning, simulations, competency-based training); ability to work effectively with Ministries of Health, WHO teams, and partners in diverse contexts, including emergency settings; expert knowledge of English, French, or Portuguese.
