Organizational Context
These positions are located in Regional Bureaux (RB), Country Offices (CO), and Area/Field Offices (AO/FO). Incumbents typically report to a Policy and Programme Officer or Head of Field Office. At this level, incumbents are expected to demonstrate accountability and initiative to respond effectively to diverse requests with only general guidance. They must exercise judgment in managing day-to-day operational issues and unforeseen problems, and are also expected to manage resources and supervise/coordinate support staff.
Job Purpose
To provide effective specialized support and technical analysis to policy and programme activities to effectively respond to food assistance needs. This involves contributing to the development and implementation of various activities and processes within the area of specialization, ensuring alignment with broader programmatic policies and guidelines. The role supports project management for specific programs, preparing reports and data analyses on food assistance needs, resource utilization, and program performance, highlighting trends and issues. Accurate and timely data recording and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders are crucial for effective food security analysis and assistance delivery. The position also contributes to capacity building and serves as a focal point for operational issues, supervising support staff and applying emergency preparedness practices.
Responsibilities
The role of an Assistant Programme Officer (FT G6) within the World Food Programme (WFP) involves providing specialized technical support and analysis for policy and programme activities, ensuring effective response to food assistance needs. Key responsibilities include contributing to the development and implementation of diverse activities and projects, ensuring alignment with broader WFP policies and guidelines. This involves preparing detailed reports and data analyses on aspects like food assistance needs, resource utilization, and programme progress, highlighting trends and issues while maintaining quality standards. The role also requires accurate and timely data recording for technical areas such as assistance programmes and food security assessments, ensuring information consistency. Collaboration with internal teams and external partners, including local partners, agencies, NGOs, and government institutions, is crucial for effective project implementation, monitoring, and accurate food security analysis. Furthermore, the position contributes to capacity building for WFP staff, cooperating partners, and national authorities, and acts as a focal point for resolving operational issues within their area of responsibility. The role may also involve supervising and guiding support staff to ensure objectives are met within agreed timelines and standards, and applying emergency preparedness practices for rapid response to crises.
Work Experience
The role requires a minimum of six years of professional experience. Desired experience includes working with technical teams (e.g., nutrition, VAM), contributing to program implementation, and participating in policy discussions. Candidates must have completed secondary education, with a post-secondary certificate in the relevant functional area. Fluency in the UN language used at the duty station and, if different, the language of the country of assignment is also necessary.
