Job Purpose
The Consultant National for Market Profile Update in Mauritania will be responsible for updating market profiles in targeted regions, integrating a systemic analysis of factors influencing market functionality, food access, and household food and nutrition security. This role involves documenting key markets, describing supply chains and trade flows, analyzing price trends and volatility, and assessing the role of markets in household access to food, with a focus on vulnerable groups. The consultant will identify risks and opportunities for market-based interventions sensitive to nutrition, gender, protection, social cohesion, and climate adaptation. Key deliverables include detailed reports, policy briefs, and capacity building workshops for national stakeholders to enhance market monitoring, early warning systems, and program implementation.

The role involves updating market profiles in targeted regions of Mauritania, analyzing systemic factors affecting market function, food access, and household food and nutrition security. This includes documenting market types, supply chains, trade flows, and associated constraints. The analysis will cover price trends, seasonality, trade margins, and factors influencing price volatility for essential commodities. A key focus is evaluating the role of markets in household access to food, particularly for vulnerable groups. The position requires integrating a systemic approach to examine production, transformation, storage, distribution, consumption, nutrition, post-harvest losses, food security, sustainability, and climate adaptation. It also involves identifying risks and opportunities for market-based interventions sensitive to nutrition, gender, protection, social cohesion, and climate adaptation, and proposing recommendations for market monitoring, early warning systems, cash-based transfers, local procurement, and value chain support. Capacity building for national and local actors in market data collection and analysis is also a responsibility.
Work Experience
The role requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in market analysis, food security, nutrition, livelihoods, quantitative and qualitative methods, price analysis, climate resilience, gender and inclusion, data visualization, and workshop facilitation. Experience in Sahelian or comparable contexts is essential. Proficiency in French, Arabic, or local languages is a plus.
