Organizational Context

This Senior Doctor position is based in the Sudan Country Office (SDCO), a critical hub for WFP's operations in a challenging environment. The role contributes to ensuring the health and well-being of WFP personnel.

Job Purpose

The Senior Doctor will provide essential clinical services, including primary healthcare and emergency medical care, to WFP staff, other UN agency personnel, and their eligible dependents in Sudan. This role is crucial for maintaining the health and operational capacity of WFP personnel in a demanding context. Beyond direct patient care, the Senior Doctor will offer vital technical and clinical advice to the WFP Clinics Coordinator. This support will focus on the establishment, effective operation, and continuous improvement of WFP Clinics, ensuring all services meet professional standards and organizational requirements. The position also involves contributing to health promotion, disease prevention initiatives, and providing clinical inputs for medical evacuations, thereby playing a key role in safeguarding the well-being of WFP's workforce.

Responsibilities

The Senior Doctor is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical services, including primary and emergency care, to WFP staff, other UN personnel, and their dependents. This involves conducting medical consultations, examinations, and assessments, such as entry, periodic, exit, and driver's fitness evaluations. The role also entails offering technical oversight to ensure evidence-based patient care aligns with professional standards and ethical practices across all WFP Clinics. A key aspect is providing continuous technical guidance for clinic operations, including medical supply chains, procurement, referral networks, and partnerships with local facilities. The Senior Doctor contributes to health information systems by providing input on data analysis, tracking utilization, and maintaining patient data systems. Furthermore, the position supports health promotion initiatives, disease prevention campaigns, and staff wellbeing programs. Ensuring strict adherence to medical confidentiality and data protection standards is paramount. The Senior Doctor also plays a crucial role in emergency functions, contributing to medical evacuations and liaising with staff counselors for psychosocial support, while also overseeing service delivery through periodic site visits.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional postgraduate experience relevant to the field is required. Experience in a hardship location under difficult and insecure environments is considered an asset. Specialist expertise in assessing medical health needs and risks is essential, along with the ability to manage medical emergencies with limited resources. Strong clinical knowledge, excellent communication, and analytical skills are necessary. The ability to work effectively with diverse populations and deliver training sessions is also important.
