Job Purpose
The Data Scientist will support current AI initiatives within the WFP's Regional Office for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe (MENAEE). This role involves identifying state-of-the-art AI models suitable for specific use cases, training and retraining these models with relevant annotated datasets, and performing exploratory data analysis to uncover insights and patterns. The Data Scientist will also be responsible for feature engineering to enhance model performance, applying Natural Language Processing techniques for text data tasks, and optimizing models through evaluation and hyperparameter tuning. Collaboration with team members, thorough documentation of work, and contributing to the organization's knowledge base are also key aspects of this position, ensuring effective application of data science in humanitarian contexts.
Responsibilities
The World Food Programme (WFP) is seeking Data Scientists to support its Technology Division. Responsibilities include identifying and training state-of-the-art AI models for specific use cases, evaluating and optimizing model performance, and performing exploratory data analysis to uncover patterns and insights. Data Scientists will also be involved in feature engineering to enhance model performance and will work with Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks such as sentiment analysis and text classification. Collaboration with team members, thorough documentation of work, and contributing to the organization's knowledge base are also key duties. The role requires a strong understanding of statistics, machine learning algorithms, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or R. Successful candidates will contribute to WFP's digital transformation efforts, leveraging data and technology to better serve vulnerable populations and improve humanitarian operations globally. The position is based in Cairo, supporting operations across the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe region.
Work Experience
The role requires two to three years of relevant experience in Computer Science, AI, or Data Science. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, a solid understanding of statistics and machine learning algorithms, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Experience with AWS is a plus.
