Job Purpose
The Wellness Officer (Medical Doctor) will be responsible for promoting, preventing, and protecting the health and safety of WFP staff in Haiti. This role involves providing medical support, including emergency services and referrals, conducting medical examinations, and advising on health matters. The officer will also manage travel medicine services, ensure compliance with UN medical protocols, and contribute to outbreak response and staff training on health and safety. Additionally, the position requires assessing and mitigating health risks, including environmental hazards and disease outbreaks, and coordinating with local medical facilities and health partners to ensure adequate healthcare access for staff and their families.
Responsibilities
The Wellness Officer, a Medical Doctor, plays a crucial role in safeguarding the health and safety of World Food Programme (WFP) staff. This position involves designing and coordinating medical services, focusing on health promotion, prevention, and protection, aligned with the WFP's Wellness Strategy. The officer provides essential travel medicine services, including destination-specific health advice and access to necessary medications and kits. A key responsibility is managing and reporting on all staff health matters, which includes conducting medical examinations for recruitment and periodic assessments, reviewing sick leave, and identifying health hazards. The role ensures compliance with UN medical protocols, such as those for HIV/AIDS and first aid, and supports emergency response capacities, including mass casualty incidents. The Wellness Officer also implements staff health training programs, assesses occupational health risks in various work settings, and coordinates with local medical facilities to ensure appropriate care and manage medical expenses. Furthermore, they assess and respond to disease outbreaks and environmental hazards impacting staff and operations, and confidentially identify staff requiring psychological support, coordinating assistance as needed. This role is vital for maintaining a healthy and productive workforce within a challenging humanitarian context.
Work Experience
Requires extensive experience in outbreak response and emergencies. A minimum of 5 years of progressive healthcare experience is necessary, with 1-2 years specifically within an international organization. Additionally, at least five years of experience in general medicine in developing countries or conflict zones is required. Prior experience in remote medicine, occupational health, or humanitarian healthcare settings is advantageous. Experience in creating training programs and conducting workshops/presentations is also sought.
