Job Purpose
The Specialist in Agri-food Value Chains will play a crucial role in designing and implementing strategies to enhance local food systems and value chains in Venezuela. This position supports WFP's objective to improve food availability, quality, accessibility, and stability by strengthening the links between local food production and national markets. The specialist will identify market opportunities, analyze bottlenecks, and propose viable solutions to improve infrastructure, services, and commercial articulation. This involves engaging with producers, agro-industries, government institutions, and the private sector to foster strategic alliances and build capacities. The ultimate goal is to contribute to more efficient, resilient, and inclusive food systems, aligning with WFP's broader mission of humanitarian assistance and sustainable development.
Responsibilities
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, dedicated to saving lives in emergencies and building pathways to peace, stability, and prosperity through food assistance. WFP operates in approximately 100 countries, assisting over 100 million people annually. In Venezuela, WFP focuses on improving food security for vulnerable populations by implementing programs in school feeding, food assistance, livelihood training, and climate change preparedness. A key initiative involves strengthening agri-food value chains, promoting local production, and integrating more efficient, resilient, and inclusive food systems. The role of an Agri-food Value Chain Specialist involves designing and implementing strategies to support local market actors, enhance market capacities, and improve connections between local food production and national markets. This includes identifying opportunities to link producers, agro-industries, and markets, as well as developing strategic partnerships to transform food systems and align food-based social protection programs with local production. Responsibilities include contributing to methodology design, conducting sector analyses, mapping stakeholders, identifying bottlenecks, proposing viable solutions, and facilitating linkages with public institutions and private enterprises. The specialist will also support workshops and prepare reports documenting learnings and impacts, ensuring effective coordination and multisectoral synergies.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in agricultural value chains, local markets, productive or agro-business development, working with cooperatives and small producers, and engaging with the private sector. Experience in field work, conducting interviews, and data collection is also necessary. Experience with international organizations or humanitarian sector projects is desirable.
