Organizational Context

The UN-HABITAT Climate Change and Urban Environment Section develops reports, policy briefs, and digital materials on urban climate action. The section aims to present research, data, and practical knowledge to help stakeholders understand and utilize evidence for policy-making and decision-making, ultimately contributing to the acceleration of local climate action initiatives globally.

Job Purpose

This role supports the Climate Change and Urban Environment Section by translating complex technical content into clear, accessible, and engaging visual products. The primary objective is to enhance stakeholder comprehension and facilitate the use of evidence in informing policies, programs, and decisions. By creating compelling visual communications, the volunteer will directly contribute to accelerating local climate action and supporting UN-HABITAT's mission in this critical area. The assignment focuses on graphic design and data visualization to make technical information more impactful.

Responsibilities

The Online Volunteer will support the design and production of selected publications and visual communication materials under the guidance of the section head and design focal point. Key duties include developing visual concepts and layouts for reports and knowledge products, formatting content according to UN-Habitat branding, and creating charts, infographics, and illustrations based on provided data. The volunteer will also assist with limited copy-editing of captions and headings, incorporate feedback, and prepare final digital and editable source files. The expected deliverable is a complete package of publications and related visual materials within the 12-week assignment period.

Work Experience

Required experience includes demonstrated graphic design, publication design, or visual communication skills. Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or comparable software is essential. Experience designing reports and knowledge products, along with the ability to present technical information visually, is also required. Desirable experience includes data visualization, accessible design, climate action, sustainable development, and prior work with international organizations.

Skills
