Organizational Context

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a UN specialized agency dedicated to achieving the highest possible level of health for all people. WHO leads global health initiatives, sets research priorities, establishes standards, develops evidence-based policies, and provides technical support. The Communications Unit at the WHO Regional Office for Africa plays a crucial role in strengthening public health advocacy, resource mobilization, and enhancing the visibility and impact of WHO's work across the African Region.

Job Purpose

The UN Volunteer will be an integral part of the Communications Unit at the WHO Regional Office for Africa, providing essential support to the Regional Director, senior management, technical programmes, health emergency operations, and country offices. This role is critical for producing high-quality audiovisual and multimedia content, digital materials, leadership messaging, and social media assets. The incumbent's contributions will directly support the Unit’s regional communications projects, ensuring WHO's work and public health guidance are effectively communicated. By collaborating with stakeholders, the UN Volunteer will help enhance public health advocacy, resource mobilization efforts, and overall visibility and credibility of WHO's initiatives throughout the African Region.

Responsibilities

The UN Volunteer will be responsible for the end-to-end production and management of audiovisual content. This includes recording interviews, statements, presentations, and events using professional equipment, ensuring high standards of image and sound quality. The role involves editing various video formats, creating short-form adaptations for social media, and incorporating titles, graphics, and branding elements. The incumbent will also contribute to visual storytelling by translating complex public health information into engaging content, assisting with scripts and storyboards, and ensuring ethical storytelling practices. Graphic design support for video thumbnails, social media cards, and infographics is also a key duty. Furthermore, the volunteer will assist in maintaining the audiovisual studio, managing equipment, and organizing digital assets according to WHO standards. Coordination with communication officers and technical experts, reporting on production progress, and contributing to workflow documentation are also expected.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in professional video recording and editing is required. This includes hands-on experience with cameras, microphones, and lighting equipment, as well as editing institutional content and social media videos. Experience preparing audiovisual products for digital platforms, basic graphic design, and managing production deadlines is essential. A professional portfolio showcasing relevant work is required. Proficiency in editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, and familiarity with graphic design tools are necessary.

Skills

Key competencies include effective communication, producing high-quality results efficiently, fostering teamwork and integration, and adapting to a changing environment. Technical skills required encompass proficiency in professional video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro), motion graphics (e.g., Adobe After Effects), graphic design applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop), camera operation, sound recording, and understanding of video formats and digital asset management. Knowledge of public health information presentation and ethical content production is also important.
