Human Rights Associate
Organizational Context
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Chile is part of a strategic entry point for promoting and protecting human rights. As the UN's principal human rights body, OHCHR integrates human rights into UN country team operations and strengthens national institutions and civil society. This position is within the Regional Office for South America (ROSA) in Santiago, supporting States in promoting and protecting all human rights through technical assistance, advice, and capacity building across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Job Purpose
The Human Rights Associate will join the OHCHR Regional Office for South America's (ROSA) Early Warning and Risk Analysis Team in Santiago, Chile. The role involves developing early warning analyses and risk assessments for human rights issues, building networks, and supporting efforts to protect human rights and prevent violations. A key function will be ensuring the cross-cutting integration of human rights perspectives into the UN's response to humanitarian and other crises in the region. This position contributes directly to OHCHR's mandate of strengthening international human rights mechanisms and promoting equality and combating discrimination.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of the ROSA Emergency Response Team, the National UN Volunteer will monitor human rights, political, security, and legal developments in assigned countries. This includes collecting, classifying, and systematizing relevant information and data. The associate will review and systematize open-source information on priority human rights issues, identifying timely developments for analysis, reporting, and early warning. Concise analyses of human rights contexts and situations will be prepared, highlighting key trends, risks, affected groups, and implications for OHCHR's work. Contributions will be made to maintaining databases and preparing national/regional overviews and thematic reports on human rights risks in South America. Support will be provided for human rights monitoring missions, fostering links with human rights defenders, and ensuring gender mainstreaming in all activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of general experience is required, with at least one year of relevant work experience in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, communication, or a related human rights field. Experience in professional or research work at the national and/or international level related to human rights is necessary. Demonstrated analytical and writing skills are essential. Technological proficiency, including Microsoft Office and experience with media and open-source information research, is desirable.
