Organizational Context

UNHCR Bulgaria works to protect refugees and enhance the national protection system within the EU's evolving asylum framework. Established in 1993, the office supports authorities and civil society in refugee protection. Bulgaria, historically a haven for persecuted individuals, ratified the 1951 Geneva Convention in 1993. UNHCR globally aids over 122 countries, providing essential assistance and safeguarding rights for displaced persons. In Bulgaria, UNHCR coordinates the response to the Ukraine situation and supports alignment with EU standards, addressing challenges like integration and socio-economic barriers.

Job Purpose

This role involves creating two animated explainer videos on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum for UNHCR Bulgaria. The videos will clarify complex legal and procedural information regarding asylum-seekers' and refugees' rights, and address the needs of individuals with temporary protection. The aim is to make this information accessible and engaging for a broad audience seeking international protection. The volunteer will translate provided scripts, legal content, and key messages into clear, visual narratives. This contribution is crucial for enhancing understanding and support for vulnerable populations within Bulgaria's role as an EU external border.

Responsibilities

The Online Volunteer will be responsible for developing storyboards and visual concepts for two animated explainer videos based on UNHCR Bulgaria's provided content. This includes producing two separate 2D animated or motion graphics videos, each approximately 2-4 minutes long. The volunteer will create clear and accessible visualizations of legal and procedural information, adhering to the script and guidance from UNHCR. Throughout the production process, the volunteer must incorporate feedback from the UNHCR Bulgaria team. The final deliverables include two high-quality, web-compatible videos. If the volunteer is Bulgarian-speaking, providing the videos in Bulgarian alongside English is desirable. Editable project files should be supplied where possible.

Work Experience

Experience in animation, motion graphics, or explainer video production is required. Proficiency in animation or video editing software (e.g., Adobe After Effects, Adobe Animate, Blender, Canva, Vyond) is necessary. The ability to communicate complex information visually is essential. A portfolio or samples of previous work are highly desirable. Interest in human rights, volunteerism, and the UN is also valued.

Skills

Required skills include proficiency in animation or video editing software, and the ability to communicate complex information through clear and engaging visual storytelling. Strong attention to detail and collaborative work ethic are important. Fluency in English is required, and fluency in Bulgarian is desirable. An interest in human rights, volunteerism, and the work of the United Nations is also a plus.
