Teaching English to Underprivileged Children
Organizational Context
Better Life Vietnam (BLV), established in 2010 and registered as a Social Enterprise in 2016, is dedicated to enhancing educational conditions for underprivileged children and youth in Vietnam. The organization focuses on reducing the burden on poor families by promoting knowledge and ensuring children receive the education they deserve. BLV's core projects include a Books Library, Scholarship program, and English Classes, aiming to address the critical need for improved English education, especially in rural areas.
Job Purpose
This role aims to address the significant challenge of English education access for underprivileged children in Vietnam, particularly those from low-income families and rural areas who lack opportunities for quality learning and native speaker interaction. The Online English Class Program provides these children with a platform to practice English with volunteers from English-speaking countries. By focusing on communication and speaking skills, this initiative supports improved access to quality education, directly contributing to SDG 4. The program has successfully boosted students' confidence in speaking English, enabling them to express themselves more comfortably and fostering a desire for further improvement.
Responsibilities
Online Volunteers will support beginner-level children aged 6-14 through small-group online English classes, typically teaching 1-3 groups per week for one hour each. Responsibilities include leading conversational English practice sessions using provided materials and structured guidance, focusing on improving pronunciation, spoken communication, and building confidence. Volunteers will help identify and correct spelling, grammar, and word usage errors, support grammar and vocabulary development, and may create additional interactive lesson materials with prior approval. Key tasks involve reviewing lesson materials in advance, participating in orientation and trial sessions, and completing student evaluation sheets post-course. Familiarity with Google Meet is an asset.
Work Experience
Teaching experience or a teaching certificate is desirable but not required. Experience working with children, facilitating online learning, or creating engaging educational activities is considered an asset. Familiarity with the Google Meet platform is also beneficial.
Skills
Strong English communication skills (native level required), patience, and a genuine interest in supporting children and youth learning English. Ability to build confidence and encourage spoken communication. Skills in identifying and correcting grammar and vocabulary errors are important. Experience in creating engaging educational activities and familiarity with online platforms like Google Meet are advantageous.
