Organizational Context
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) globally leads and supports the UN security management system. UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in challenging environments by managing security risks. Its mission is to provide trusted security leadership and solutions, aligning its work with programme activities. The UNV will support the Strategic Planning Unit's normative work, including performance measurement, risk management, and strategic foresight.
Job Purpose
The UN Volunteer Data Engineer Specialist will support the Strategic Planning Unit by providing timely assistance in normative work areas. This includes contributing to performance measurement, enterprise risk management, and strategic foresight initiatives. The role involves close collaboration with the Programme Management Officer and the Strategic Planning Unit to ensure the effective execution of these critical functions. The specialist will leverage data engineering expertise to enhance the department's analytical capabilities and support strategic decision-making processes within the UN system.
Responsibilities
The Data Engineer Specialist will design, develop, and maintain organizational data platforms, pipelines, and integration frameworks using technologies like Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Services. Responsibilities include building data solutions for analytics, reporting, and automation, and developing AI-powered solutions such as chatbots and intelligent assistants for strategic workforce decisions. The role requires collaboration with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable solutions, ensuring data governance, security, and compliance. The specialist will monitor and optimize data platforms, implement technical solutions, extract data features, and document new data sources. Additionally, they will apply ML and advanced analytics techniques, assist in testing data science models, and contribute to developing data science products and visualizations to reveal insights and support evidence-based decision-making.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of relevant experience in designing and implementing scalable data platforms, data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and analytics solutions. Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Services, Power Platform, AI-powered solutions (chatbots, Generative AI), Python/R, SQL, and DevOps tools is essential. Experience with stakeholders and data governance is also required.
