Social Media Strategy Support - Unipod Malawi
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been active in Malawi since 1964, working to reduce poverty and inequality. UNDP Malawi collaborates with the government, civil society, and private sector to foster economic growth, environmental sustainability, and good governance, aligning with Malawi's Agenda 2063 and the SDGs. In 2024, UNDP established the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at MUBAS to promote innovation and product development, connecting academia, innovators, and industry to address development challenges. UniPod is part of a broader African network of innovation hubs.
Job Purpose
This role supports the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) in Malawi by strengthening its online presence and social media engagement. The UN Volunteer will implement a social media strategy to increase awareness of UniPod's facilities, services, and opportunities for young people, innovators, and industry. The assignment aims to enhance UniPod's visibility, expand its audience, and foster meaningful engagement across digital platforms. The volunteer will gain practical experience in digital communications and development storytelling, contributing to youth innovation and entrepreneurship in Malawi. This role offers opportunities to build a professional portfolio, understand UNDP's approach to innovation, and develop expertise in international development communications.
Responsibilities
The UN Volunteer will support the implementation of UniPod Malawi's social media strategy across platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X. Key duties include developing, scheduling, and publishing engaging content, creating multimedia assets (graphics, photos, videos, captions) that highlight UniPod's programs, innovators, and impact. The role involves producing youth-focused storytelling and educational content on innovation and entrepreneurship. The volunteer will coordinate content featuring stakeholders, monitor social media performance, prepare analytics reports, and recommend improvements. Maintaining consistent branding, documenting processes, and collaborating with UniPod staff and UNDP Malawi are also essential. The goal is to increase UniPod's following and engagement by approximately 10-15% during the assignment.
Work Experience
Experience in managing social media platforms and creating digital content for an organization, university, nonprofit, or innovation hub is required. Familiarity with content planning, social media strategies, and tools like Canva, CapCut, or Meta Business Suite is necessary. Experience working with multidisciplinary or volunteer teams is considered an asset.
Skills
Strong understanding of social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X) and their analytics is crucial. Excellent communication, storytelling, and content creation skills, including basic graphic design and video editing, are needed. The role requires strong organizational skills, creativity, the ability to work independently, and meet deadlines. An interest in youth innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and the UN SDGs is important.
